CLFP’s board of directors also received updates on legislative, regulatory and other issues affecting the food processing industry from its Government Affairs Directors Trudi Hughes and John Larrea and its President Rob Neenan. Key legislative issues currently include groundwater, food waste, labor, proposed sugar sweetened beverage tax, regulatory reform, pesticides and natural gas pipeline safety. Board members also were provided an update on Proposition 65 and an air and energy regulatory outlook. At the chair’s dinner on the final night of the meeting, CLFP members honored outgoing Chair Greg Estep and also recognized David Withycombe of Del Monte Foods, Inc., for his long term service on CLFP’s board of directors. Withycombe has served on CLFP’s board since 1991, served as chair in 1999 and will be retiring from the board later this year. Del Monte Foods was one of CLFP’S original members when the organization was formed in 1905. The annual meeting included a dynamic array of speakers. J. Van Der Stoep of Sound Counsel Communications provided insight on the important topic of preparing and handling a crisis communications situation in the food processing industry (see page 28 for more information). Dr. Elizabeth Pivonka, president of the Produce for Better Health Foundation, spoke about the foundation’s work to promote all forms of fruits and vegetables. Attorney Meredith Nikkel of Downey Brand LLP, addressed groundwater adjudi- cations in the age of sustainable groundwater manage- ment. Dr. Anu Prakash, food science program director at David Withycombe of Del Monte Foods, Inc., was honored for his long term service on CLFP’s board of directors.
