CONTROLS ENGINEERING SUPERVISOR

 

PURPOSE:

Summarize briefly the major function and purpose of the position.

To review and create electrical designs, drawings and specifications involving existing and new technology for food processing equipment.

 

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

What are the minimum qualifications an employee must have in order to perform the duties of the position? (I.e. educational requirements, licenses, certification, work experience, training etc.)?

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in industrial machine controls.  Must have experience in control system products: developing, testing, documenting, manufacturing, and maintaining.  BSEE with seven plus (7+) years of increasing responsibility in technical positions involving hardware and software development projects and engineering supervision.

  • Ability to supervise and evaluate engineering staff
  • Ability to understand PC based control systems with Microsoft O/S
  • Ability to program in C++
  • Ability to read machine control electrical schematics
  • Ability to program PLC’s & GUI systems
  • Ability to configure industrial machine controls, including AC/DC drives
  • Ability to read, interpret and prepare applicable technical information and suggest design/process changes to ensure simple, functional and cost effective results
  • Ability to communicate within a team environment
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data
  • Ability to anticipate potential problems and take preventative actions
  • Ability to use MRP based business system, Syteline or equivalent
  • Knowledge of modern scheduling tools
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Ability to work with customers to solve issues

 

 

RELATIONSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES:

Indicate positions that report directly to this position.   Number of direct / indirect reports.

Supervise 5-7 controls technicians and engineers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Describe general working conditions (i.e. noise level, temperature, around heavy machinery)

Approximately 75% of all work is performed in an office setting, 5% on the shop floor and 20% traveling to various sites.  Extended periods of time will be at a computer terminal.  Possible exposure to hazards such as noise, heavy equipment, temperature extremes, chemicals, etc. while working in assembly areas and field service applications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate staff by
    • Identifying & establishing their Major Responsibility Areas
    • Leading their development to align with business objectives
    • Monitoring their progress towards achieving identified goals and objectives

  • Prepare reports, correspondence, procedures and/or specifications by
    • Consolidating technical data and papers from sales personnel, customers and publications
    • Using effective internal presentation and report writing skills
    • Establishing internal processes and standards to insure efficient development of systems and products to meet business and customer expectations.

  • Provide technical leadership of the Log-TEC product line by
    • Learning all aspects of the product
    • Documenting complete manufacturing process with Bill of Material’s
    • Setting up procedures for software & hardware testing
    • Tracking product quality and customer complaints
    • Understanding validation requirements

  • Support the electrical control needs of the business by
    • Applying basic scientific/engineering principles and specific procedures
    • Using CAD, database systems and facilities to make layouts, evaluate control systems, analyze and generate new designs
    • Testing and evaluating prototypes and products
    • Traveling to customer sites to perform controls start-up of food processing equipment
